Textual analysis notes

In lesson we focused on some main tips to make a good textual analysis because everyone was struggling to understand the concepts of what to do and what to look for. I got loads of useful notes and hope to put them to use in my textual analysis' over the year. Here is a copy of all the notes I hope to use:

Media language – Refers to the technical elements media producers use to communicate meaning to the reader/audience.

Textual analysis:  

·         Analyses how the star is portrayed

·         Camera shots

·         Mise en scene 

·         Does the mood fit?

·         Editing suiting the song

·         Audio and visual relationship

·         Special – does it feel relaxing? If the song is slow is there slow long takes

·         Does it go with the temp of the song?  

·         Colours used

·         Mood

·         Tone



Ten shot textual analysis:

·         Pick 10 shots

·         Explain what the shot type is and say the impact on the audience

·         Comment on editing

·         Link to genre

·         Link to theory (Goodwin/ genre theory)

·         Link to representation  

·         Chronological order

Album Cover:

·         Find out who designed it

·         Is it typical of the genre?

·         Is the artists name or album title featured?

·         Why have they or haven’t they featured these things? #

Post-modernism – most things that have already happened have created modern society.

Website analysis:

·         Pick 5 features to talk about

·         Go into detail

·         Pick things that may not appear on the website (the band name may not appear)

·         Is the website design simple and easy?
