Does Genre Exist?

Rick Altman(1999)

Film theorist Rick Altman argued that there is no such thing as 'pure' genre anymore. Genre is progressive in that it will always change.
He says that generic conventions are a thing of the past. The theory suggests the audience, in general have become tired of the same thing over and over and need a lot more different stuff to keep them entertained and to create appeal.  He says genre is only surviving and keeping its name due to Hybridisation - or genres "borrowing" conventions from each other and then by doing this it makes it a lot more harder to sort into categories.

Key Words:
Intertextuality- direct link to another form of media.
Pastiche-  when they pull elements from other music video's and bring them together to create a new piece.
Parody- When someone is having a joke about something else, sometimes only slight but sometimes the can do it a lot.

Music videos play on our suspension of disbelief.

In my opinion, I do believe genre exists because it defines the different types of film there is. A easy explanation of this would be a comedy horror, if their wasn't genre and sub genre then people would just know it as a scary film  that wasn't really scary so it wold never be defined, where as now, it is a lot easier for people to just say its a comedy horror so they don't have to explain everything in detail.
