History of music video's

Music videos have developed much over time and there have been many dramatic changes in the presentation of videos and the people that are in them whether that be a woman or a man. Also costume and makeup and hair styles have changed along the way. Here is a video showing the songs that spent the longest time at Number 1 through the time span of 1920's -2009. There is a huge difference in the video's even in the past 10 or 20 years. This is due to society developing so quickly and a few years ago people wouldn't have dreamt of posting such controversial music videos like we see today.

A good example of a turning point in the music would be Madonna's 'Like a prayer'. When this video was released there were many arguments and disagreements with certain aspects of the video.
One of these was that in the video Madonna is seen in a church knelt before a statue which is assumed to be Jesus, this statue of Jesus is of a black ethnicity and many people argued this point and saw it as racist and unfair as normally Jesus is thought of as a white male.
A second point was that Madonna was wearing quite a revealing dress for the time and no one had ever really crossed that barrier, so for Madonna to not only cross that but also dance in a catholic church dressed in that way sparked anger and people saw it as disrespect for the church and the belief.
It has been suggested that Madonna did this music video in protest due to the racism that was still dominant in America at the time, this would explain why there was so much controversy over the video because it was a point of high interest and intensity at the time.

In the present day many controversial music videos have been brought out, one that caused a lot of arguments and disputes was Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines', this was because many people believed it was objectifying women as they were dressed in revealing clothing and some of the lyric's were seen as disrespectful towards women. The women were dressed in little tops and very small shorts and many people saw that as objectification of women and it was another shocking turning point and there has been much worse released since.
